Course Level - L3 + (skill level details)
*Students should bring a body of work they would like to self publish
This 2-day course will provide an introduction and specific how-to for photographers looking to self publish artist books. By viewing sample books and case studies, evaluating student work, and in-depth presentation of the steps required to complete their book, participants will leave with the inspiration, tools, skills, and resources to finish their project. All of the following material will be presented as general topics, but also within the context of Henkin’s own experiences in self-publishing.
Book publishing for photographers has exploded over the last few years. Expanded options for printing has enabled artists to consider publishing their own works, through both traditional and handmade processes. There is now a level playing field between established photographers and amateurs and emerging artists, enabling anyone to craft their work specifically for the book. While most of the focus on self publishing has centered on print-on-demand services, creating books produced by the artist, or artist books, offers an even wider array of control, options, and methods, making it an attractive option to expand their storytelling capabilities.

Topics to be covered:
A history of self published photography books
Why self publish?
Advantages and challenges of self publishing
How to publish
Other general topics will include:
Staying organized and focused
Case studies: How did others do it
Resources and tools to get the project done right
In addition to the workshop, Friday April-20 will be an evening of books, with a full selection of titles from Vela Noche available to view & purchase * more details to follow, open to non-workshop participants.
LAUREN HENKIN,
Born in Washington, D.C. in 1974, award-winning, internationally shown photographer Lauren Henkin grew up in Maryland. In 1996, after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, she moved home to Maryland and began working as an architect. During the next 10 years, she worked as the public programs manager for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, a book designer and creative director.
Henkin is a frequent reviewer, private educator, Photolucida board member, author of two artist books ( Displaced and Silence is an Orchard ) , frequent speaker on marketing techniques for fine art photographers, and active member in the photographic community. She has served as a guest critic for Portland State University’s School of Architecture as well as Lightbox Photographic and Lúz Gallery in Canada. In addition, she recently started PhotoRadio, a blog presenting audio interviews with curators, gallerists, artists, publishers, educators and more. Her work is supported in part by the Regional Arts and Culture Commission, located in Portland, Oregon.
She states, “The questions I am most concerned with when photographing are: What are the things that last? What, if anything is permanent? How are the things that we value or leave behind reflections of who we are?. A big part of what I do is provide a formal medium for valuing and studying informal subjects — to pay homage to things we see everyday; toys we leave on the floor, dresses hanging in a closet, or trees growing beside dumpsters. I tend to work from the inside out, using photography as a way to get to know myself better. The satisfaction in all of this is seeing the progression from one body of work to another, a visual diary of my life, my worries, my fears, and hopes.” Visit Lauren's website; laurenhenkin.com
