The emphasis of this workshop is on expanding each participant’s level of visual awareness, sense of personal authorship, confidence and enthusiasm for their photography. It's not the place to be if you are only looking for a pat on the back. This workshop will challenge you to grow creatively, through a dynamic combination of lectures, fieldwork, discussions and critiques that are designed to help you move your photography forward.

This 3-day seminar and workshop will help you identify the essential aspects of photography that lead to great images for those who are new to photography and those with years of experience.

Our focus will be on images and image making, and along the way we will cover the essential techniques of refined camera work, available light, types of light, location lighting, lenses, light meters, image editing and workflow as well as critical equipment choices in a rapidly changing and exciting technology environment.

Seminar / Workshop Itinerary

Day-1, 4:00pm – 9:00pm

The first evening is in our seminar location where we will go over the important basics of photographic history, camera fundamentals, equipment choices, and image structure. We will also take the opportunity to do a little after dark photography before calling it a night.

Day-2, 9:00 to 6:00pm

Today we go out as a group (usually 6-10 people) to work on specific assignments in the downtown area. We focus on street photography, environmental portraits, architectural and scenic photography, with breaks for coffee and lunch. Technically we will examine how to work unobtrusively in the street, the use of light-meters, setting a custom white balance, how to effectively modify available light, and finding and using the right light in any location.

We finish the day around 6:00 and for those who can join us we go for a well earned dinner with good company, fine food, and of course a few drinks.

Day-3, 9:00 to 5:00pm

We meet in the morning and start with a lecture on workflow, including how to set up your DAM (digital asset management) system, image archiving and backup options, image editing in Adobe Lightroom, and digital black & white.

During the morning session, each photographer will have time to edit and select images for a group review that begins after a relaxed lunch together.

What To Bring

Camera and Lenses – One camera body and a small selection of lenses with memory cards – 2 x 8GB cards are our recommended minimum. *Warning, I use Leica M digital rangefinder cameras and those participants who don’t already use this system often find that after this seminar they do too… don’t say that I didn’t warn you.

Laptop Computer with Image Editing Software – we recommend Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture, essential equipment in the digital age of photography.

Comfortable Clothing and Shoes – We work regardless of the weather, learning to make images in response to the conditions, so I highly recommend dressing for weather and comfort.
