“We do not take pictures with our cameras, but with our hearts and minds.” - Arnold Newman
A powerful portrait is a gift; an expression of the subject, but also of the photographer.
The goal of this two-day workshop is to explore the photographer's role in the making of a portrait through an understanding of their authorship and the variety of approaches they can take when making a portrait. We will expand our understanding of what a portrait is by examining the work of great photographers as well as through individual exploration of the portrait making process.
Over the course of two Saturdays we will explore environmental, intimate, and studio portraits along with various qualities of light and the degrees of likeness to abstraction that may be considered in the rendering of an interpretive portrait. This workshop is about the transition to "making" portraits based on creative and conceptual ideas.
Please note that participants are expected to undertake a portrait assignment during the week and will need to process and edit their images in preparation for a class review on the second Saturday.
Course Requirements: Workshop participants do not need any previous experience with portrait photography but they should be comfortable working with their camera equipment and be familiar with their image editing software if they are working with a digital camera.
