Dan Milnor is a superb documentary photographer, book maker and educator who has worked hard to establish a constructive and engaging online community for photographers through his popular blog Smogranch, and he is a "photographer at large" with Blurb Books. Join us for this dynamic workshop which will fill quickly or plan to attend his Friday night artists talk on November 11th.

“How do I engage with the people I’m photographing?”
Getting close, establishing a connection and making a portrait is one of the most rewarding yet challenging aspects of being a documentary photographer.
Our workshop will explore the motivations behind doing documentary work as well as cover techniques and philosophies regarding how to work quickly, how to collaborate with strangers and how to recognize optimal light.
Students should be prepared to simplify their equipment list while engaging the local atmosphere. The core ideology behind this workshop is to go beyond our current comfort level while finding a deeper relationship with the people we are photographing.
During the workshop we will have the opportunity to review participant's work, discuss project development, and look at publishing your projects in book form.
"Sometimes context and story need to be created, and these might be better served by making images that provide a sense of place..." read more thoughts from Dan on what to expect from this workshop on his blog.

ABOUT the Instructor, Dan Milnor:
Dan MILNOR, splits his time between the chaos of Southern California and the spiritual landscape of New Mexico. He is happiest with his notebook, Leica and trusty leather boots, sizing up whatever situation is happening in front of him.
Milnor is former newspaper, magazine and commercial photographer who now tries to work solely on his own projects, projects that allow him to work in the fashion he feels most likely to produce images that go beyond the temporary.

Milnor is also a “Photographer at Large” for Blurb, a print-on-demand book publishing company comprised of some of the most creative and talented folks he has ever encountered. As of today he he has created over 120 unique titles using the Blurb publishing system.
He has taught at Art Center College of Design, The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, The Julia Dean Workshops, The Academy of Art University and is scheduled to teach in Peru, Argentina and Uruguay in 2011 and 2012.

He has also found considerable success with his portrait work, which is presented by the agency Masterfile.
But perhaps most importantly, Milnor is the author of this blog, Smogranch, which allows him to speak his mind, post his mother’s poetry and bring together like minded people around the globe.
