Bedknobs & Broomsticks

In the spirit of the classic Little Golden Books for children, Little Brown Mushroom is releasing a series of photographic storybooks for grown-ups. Their first book, Bedknobs & Broomsticks, features photographs and story by Trent Parke and design by Hans Seeger.

"I was recently at a party chatting with the writer Geoff Dyer. Out of the blue, Dyer said, “I think Trent Parke is a photographic genius.” I responded by saying that not only do I agree, I believe in him so much that I’m publishing his book. Shockingly, this is Parke’s first book in ten years." Alec Soth

Priced at only $18 and limited to a numbered edition of 1000, this one is going to go fast.

Editors Note: Parke's last book Dream / Life now sells on the secondhand market for upwards of $800.00... I ordered my copy of Bedknobs & Broomsticks already!

Lauren Henkin - Displaced

Speaking of fine books, yesterday we received our gallery copy of Displaced, a limited edition artist book by Lauren Henkin.

This book is a true work of art.

Lauren has printed all of the images herself and then had master bookmaker John DeMerritt of DeMerritt Bookbinding hand make each of the 60 copies in the edition. Adding a real touch of class and craftsmanship is the letter press printing by Inge Bruggeman of Textura Printing of the essays written by Lauren.

Copies of Displaced were recently purchased by Yale University and Dartmouth College.

For those interested in viewing or purchasing the book we are happy to make the gallery copy available for viewing by appointment.

Currently there is only one copy left at the $350.00 price before the edition price rolls into the 16-30 pricing.

Book Pricing:
Edition Number 1-15 $350 (almost sold out)
NOW SOLD OUT
Edition Number 16-30 $475
Edition Number 31-45 $650

Self Publish - Be Happy

In previous posts I have discussed the global increase in activity around the publishing of photo books and this weekend event in London is a wonderful example of how independent publishing is growing.

In particular I like the model for an event that celebrates independent publishing at all levels.

The self publishing of photo books and zines is moving away from the "drag and drop" production houses such as Blurb and focusing on DIY production including the finest quality artist books made with quality pigment prints or even hand printed platinum or gelatin silver prints and letterpress text pages.
Self Publish, Be Happy Weekend at The Photographers' Gallery, London, UK 5-6 June 2010

A weekend showcase of 60 exceptional contemporary DIY photobooks, selected by Bruno Ceschel. A talk, and signings throughtout the weekend, will provide an opportunity for art book lovers to discuss, admire and buy publications originating from around the world. From the more obscure zines assembled in student bedrooms to impeccably printed photobooks, Self Publish, Be Happy Weekend will offer inspiration and happiness for everybody.

Featuring work by: Adam Murray & Robert Parkinson, Alastair Levy, Alec Soth, Alex Mctigue, Alexander Binder, Alexandra Klein and Charlotte Cotton, Asa Johannesson, Asher Penn, Aubrey Mayer, Charlotte Dumas, David Schoerner, Derek Henderson, Erik Kessels, Erik Van Der Wejjde, Esther Teichmann, Gerry Badger, Grant Willing, Heather McDonough, Jan Von Holleben, Japp Scheeren, Jason Evans, Jeff Luker, Jeremie Egry and Nicolas Poillot, Joachim Schmid, Joshua Deaner, Karol Radziszewski, Katrina Umber, Lester B. Morrison, Lina Scheynius, Lucas Blalock, Marten Lange, Maxwell Anderson, Morten Andersen, Morten Spaberg, Ofer Wolberger, Patrick Waugh, Ricardo Cases, Richard Renaldi, Sam Falls, Sebastien Girard, Shane Lavalette, Sjoerd Knibbeler, Sophie Morner, Stephen Gill, Terence Hannum, Tim Barber and Victor Sira.

Self Publish, Be Happy is an organisation founded in 2010 with the aim of celebrating and promoting self-published photobooks through events (such as fairs, exhibitions and conferences), publications and online exposure. Self Publish, Be Happy also organises workshops that help artists and photographers make and publish their own books.

Artist's Books

Displaced by Lauren Henkin

On April 30th, photographer Lauren Henkin launched her self-published artist's book Displaced at Gallery 291 in San Francisco. With an edition of just 60 copies, this finely printed and hand-bound book of Henkin's beautiful and emotive images is selling quickly, and we are very happy to have ordered our gallery copy early.

We are equally happy to host Lauren later this summer for her seminars on Marketing for Fine Art Photographers and to offer individual Portfolio Reviews. Lauren will be discussing her experience with producing and marketing her book, and yes, we will have copies for sale and an evening book-signing event. But be forewarned: the book is priced on an escalating scale so the sooner you purchase, the better. Click here to place your order.

The art of book making is experiencing a revival and the world of book arts and photography are merging to forge a dynamic new marketplace. Lauren once explained to me that book collectors are generally very focused on how a book is constructed, whereas photographers are generally focused on content. Bringing these two interests together to produce beautifully crafted books of fine photography is not new, but the market is evolving and the publishing opportunities for limited editions of handmade artist books are growing.

In August, we have renowned bookbinder Don Taylor coming to give a three-day workshop on Bookbinding for Artists and Photographers. If you are entertaining thoughts of producing an artist book, this is another must-do course.

This fall, the new Magenta Foundation Flash Forward Festival will feature a panel discussion on The Future of Photobooks. The discussion will be moderated by Stephen Mayes (Managing Director of VII Photo) and the panel includes noted industry leaders Darius Himes (Radius Books) and Alec Soth (photographer and publisher of Little Brown Mushroom).

In June we will announce our Lúz Book Award, a juried competition to co-publish an artist book and exhibition with the photographer who submits the winning project portfolio, so stay tuned for complete details.
